there are times you catch moments that you were not expecting to. such a moment arose, in my last session with maven, during a break while maven was having his feed. ryan’s mother was visiting and during this break, she ryan, and i were chatting in the living room. now that ryan is a new father, and has a son of his own, he and his mother started talking about ryan’s own childhood. she left the room for a moment, and returned with ryan’s baby album. i sat back, watched and listened, as mother and son reminisced about his childhood. it was a treat, and a real  privilege, to be a part of the stories and memories they shared.

my first session with maven went on for just over two hours. of course, it was not two hours of straight shooting as there was a feed and a few diaper changes in between. during this time, kruti and ryan had tired to get him down for a nap, but a nap was not something little maven was interested in. he was very cooperative with me during this time, however, nearing the end, he started to get a little fussy and i think he was finally ready for his nap.

i returned a week later for a second session. we had hoped that this time around that maven would be in nap mode and we could get some shot of him while asleep. when i got to kruti and ryan’s place, he had just finished his feed and he was wide awake. the first thing that struck  me was how much he seemed to have grown in just one week! ryan’s mother eventually got him to sleep and we proceeded to start the session. while he did not stay asleep for a very long time, it was just enough.

on august 12th, 2009, kruti and ryan welcomed adorable little maven into the world. i recently had the opportunity to spend a couple of sessions with them. maven was quite the curious little fellow, and despite efforts to have him nap, he remained wide-eyed and wondering, more interested in exploring his new environment. he was wonderfully cooperative and it was a real joy to photograph him.

a couple of weeks ago, we took our daugher, mohini, to robin lake beach at callaway gardens in pine mountain, ga.  it was mohini’s first time at the beach and she really enjoyed herself (she even did a little sand taste testing which seemed to agree with her!) it was fun to watch her explore elements which she had not yet been exposed to.

i tried a something different in the treatment of some of these image, a departure from what i normally do. the first image below is somewhat color high key. in the few images that follow this, i decided to go with more muted colors to present a more vintage or nostalgic look. finally, the set finishes off with a series of black and white images.
